Add missing keyboard shortcuts in macOS

In one of my previous articles, Bookmarks are bad, I detailed how I’ve been saving articles as PDF to my computer in lieu of bookmarks. Safari’s Export to PDF command is one of the few commands Safari has that doesn’t have a keyboard shortcut assigned to it, so I looked into adding a custom shortcut.

Turns out, it’s super easy to add custom shortcuts in macOS for most applications. I’m using Catalina at the time of writing.

  1. Open System Preferences
  2. Navigate to Keyboard ⭢ Shortcuts ⭢ App Shortcuts
  3. Click the + button to add a new shortcut
  4. Select the specific app you want to add a shortcut for (or make it global)
  5. Type in the exact text in the menu command
  6. Add a key combination
  7. Done!

Now I can easily save webpages to PDF with Shift-Command-P. And it shows the new shortcut right next to it in the File menu! Nice touch.
