Suggested Jams: 2016 Edition

Here’s three of the top albums from my 2016 listening history.

The Power Out by Electrelane

This band packed up shop a while ago, but 2004’s The Power Out deserves more recognition. I discovered them through “The Valleys” and that’s still my favorite.

Favorite tracks:

  1. “The Valleys”
  2. “Take the Bit Between Your Teeth”
  3. “Oh Sombra!”

General Dome by Buke & Gase

This duo made their own instruments, and the band name comes from the names of those instruments: a six-string baritone ukulele and a guitar/bass hybrid. Super cool. There’s pictures of the instruments on their Wikipedia page.

Favorite tracks:

  1. “In the Company of Fish”
  2. “Hard Times”
  3. “Split Like a Lip, No Blood On the Beard”

They Want My Soul by Spoon

One of my all-time favorite albums. I remember working 16-hour days when this album came out in August 2014, and it’s survived 461 combined listens. I have fond memories of watching them play a few tracks live in Austin during SXSW 2017.

Great soundtrack for cruising down the highway, when those reminiscent thoughts start trickling in.

Favorite tracks:

  1. “Rent I Pay”
  2. “Inside Out”
  3. “Rainy Taxi”
